Isay Weinfeld
1952
Brazil
Originally from the city of São Paulo, Isay Weinfeld is considered one of the most important Brazilian architects of his generation. With an eclectic personality, he can feel equally passionate for, and dedicate himself with the same energy to, filmmaking, theater, stage set (for plays and exhibitions), architecture and furniture design projects.
He poses provocative questions and comes up with innovative solutions. An attractive explosion of visual creativity is expressed in the designer’s singular lines. His architecture and interior design projects have won many awards, including those from the Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB), Architectural Review, and Design Awards 2014; he has also received many awards and much recognition for his furniture.
In 2002, Isay launched his first collection with ETEL. The Huguinho bar, Zezinho sideboard and Luizinho chest of drawers – named after the three nephews of Donald Duck –were given the award for “Best Contemporary Design” at the Decorex Fair in 2004. In 2008, he launched a second set of pieces for the ETEL collection. An armchair, couch, screen, tea cart and dining table now share the spotlight with a collection of accessories that combine the sophistication of metal with the purity of wood.
In 2013, Isay created an exhibition that moved through São Paulo and Vienna. “A to Z” depicted the beginning and the end of life through two pieces: a cradle and a coffin, both manufactured by ETEL.
‘Architecture is not just architecture. It is a profession where gaining experience is very important.’
