Patricia Urquiola

Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo, Spain, in 1961, but lives and works in Milan. She attended the University of Architecture at Madrid Polytechnic and Milan Polytechnic, where she graduated in 1989 with Achille Castiglioni.

Assistant lecturer to Achille Castiglioni and Eugenio Bettinelli in Milan and Paris, responsible for the new product development office of DePadova, working with Vico Magistretti, head of Lissoni Associ-ati’s design group. In 2001, she opened her own studio working on product design, architecture, and installations.

Some of her products are exposed in various Museums and collections, such as MoMA in New York, Les arts deco-ratifs in Paris or the Museum of Design in Zurich. She has won several international prices and awards, and in 2015 she was nominated Art Director of Cassina.

We have experimented with sustainable and recycled new materials giving those a “better life”. Through the artisans’ work, we have underlined the characteristics of both making them protagonists of a totally tactile project.”

PATRICIA URQUIOLA

Despite being Spanish by birth, PATRICIA URQUIOLA is considered an Italian designer as her career was cemented in Milan more than 20 years ago when she opened her design studio. During this time she has received several awards and was named Designer of the Decade by Home magazine and Hauser.

From this encounter between Italy and Brazil, two new families of pieces were born: Raízes and Cascas - both families celebrate artisanal craftsmanship and tackle the challenges of sustainability in an innovative and sensitive way. For the ETEL collection, Patricia created two product families, each with innovative materials from material leftovers from Brazilian and Italian production and industry.
