The Curved Nature of Niemeyer

16/09

On the occasion of the "Lake Como Design Festival 2023," ETEL, a universally recognized ambassador of Brazilian design and a partner of the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation, along with Studio Superluna, present one of the most prestigious masters of the 20th century - the architect and designer Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012).

Central to the installation by ETEL and Superluna Studio is one of Niemeyer's most acclaimed works - the iconic residence "Casa das Canoas" in Rio de Janeiro. This architectural marvel is a prime example of modern Brazilian design, artistically merging with nature through its ingenious construction. The "grounding block," partially embedded in the slope, forms a horizontal base for the free-form plane that gracefully extends through the surrounding gardens. The landscape itself becomes a canvas that Niemeyer skillfully uses to achieve the mesmerizing lines of the irregular curved roof, blurring the boundaries between nature and human creation.

Under the careful curation of Lissa Carmona, CEO of ETEL, and Studio Superluna, a meticulously selected collection of furniture pieces will be unveiled. Each piece resonates with the purity of form and graceful curves that echo Niemeyer's architectural vision. The exhibition will be an immersive fusion of Niemeyer's legacy and the grandeur of the "sala specchi" at Villa Olmo in Como. Among the featured creations are the Alta Chair, Low Chair, and Rio Rocking Chaise - original editions from ETEL, licensed and certified by the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation.

Once again, Studio Superluna has been called upon to design the layout of this exhibition, proposing a dialogue between Nature (the chosen theme for the festival and a tribute to Pliny the Elder in his work "Naturalis Historia"), Design, and Architecture, with the human figure at the center relating to the different scales of these themes.

Studio Superluna, has been called once again to design the set-up for this exhibition, proposing a dialogue between Nature (the theme chosen for the festival and in honor of Plinio il Vecchio in the homonymous work “Naturalis Historia”), Design and Architecture with, at the center, the human figure that relates to the different scales of these themes.

The idea is to place these masterpieces in relation to one of ON’s most famous buildings, the home of the architect “Casa das Canoas”, Rio de Janeiro 1951, on a platform that recalls the roof, precisely in scale 1:5, so that the public can observe and feel the energy enclosed in this multi complicity, accompanying the organic shape and observing the most famous sinuous and feminine lines in the world.
