Percival Lafer

1936

Brazil

Born in 1936 and graduated in Architecture from Mackenzie University in São Paulo. Still very young, right after finishing college, he had to take over his father's furniture company, Lafer, together with his brothers. Due to this, his passion for architecture could not be fully exercised. Some examples of his work as an architect include houses designed for personal friends, urban furniture designs, and architectural components. Percival Lafer's work as an industrial designer left an indelible mark on the furniture industry in Brazil.

Since his first project, his work has always been marked by boldness and originality. For him, each project should reflect the state of the art applied to innovative ideas. Thus, through his way of interpreting contemporary design, original projects emerged, many of which were protected by patents. This practice led him to create the acronym MP (for Patented Furniture), which became part of the company's logo. The MP Lafer brand was born.

"The furniture is supported by a thin piece of wood because it has a steel core."

PERCIVAL LAFER

Lafer Furniture started in 1941 with a small production of bedroom furniture using machinery acquired from a company that had closed down. However, after a brief period, Benjamin decided to focus solely on the retail side of the business. The in-house manufacturing was interrupted, but the equipment that remained inactive in the back of the store enabled, years later, the beginning of what would become Lafer's central activity: industrial production.
