Estrela Chair

Carlos Motta

Estrela Chair

1948 /2012

Designed in 1979 and part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, this was the first piece to come out of Atelier Carlos Motta that carried a synthesis of contemporary Brazilian design. It soon received acknowledgement – being shown in many exhibitions in Brazil and abroad – and a few awards, including the II Brazilian House Museum Award [II Prêmio Museu da Casa Brasileira] in 1987. It comes in two versions: with or without arms. It is an incredibly comfortable chair, with its anatomic seat and flexible backrest made of wooden slats. The name Estrela – Portuguese for star – comes from the star-shaped hole on the upper part of the backrest.
