Peroba Do Campo

Paratecoma peroba, Bignoniaceae
Ipê-claro, ipê-peroba, ipê-rajado, peroba-branca, perobinha, peroba-de-campos, white peroba.

This is a large tree – between 20 and 40 meters (65 and 130 feet) high – with a straight trunk that produces excellent wood. It has pinnate leaves, with five leaflets that are up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) long. The peroba do campo produces discreet, white flowers that are not easily seen from a distance. It also produces cylindrical, bipartite pods that are approximately 30 centimeters (12 inches) long, black, with spots when ripe, very hard, and that open to release wind-dispersal seeds of yellow color and transparent wings. The hardwood color varies between yellow-chestnut or yellowish to brownish-chestnut, sometimes presenting darker veins. The smell and taste are imperceptible. It has medium density, straight to wavy grain, and medium texture.
