Marcelo Cipis

1959

Brazil

The partnership between Etel Carmona and Marcelo Cipis started in 1991, when ETEL produced pieces of furniture designed by Fulvio Nanni for the “Cipis Transworld” installation that Marcelo created for the 21st São Paulo Art Biennial.

That was the beginning of an ideal marriage: one that combines the designer’s love of wood with the unique creativity of a humane and fun artist. In 2012, their partnership yielded great results, and Marcelo created the Kaixollas, a great example of applied art.

Cipis’ work includes drawings, illustrations for magazines, newspapers, children’s books (which he also writes), graphic projects, logos, paintings, sculptures, installations, light fixtures and furniture design, among others.

Transiting between abstraction and figuration is very natural for me. I make no conceptual distinction. Everything is painting, and everything is a matter of realizing the most disparate ideas through painting.
