Carlos Vergara

1941

Brazil

Carlos Vergara was born in Rio Grande do Sul, and is one of the most relevant Brazilian artists currently in activity. Starting early in the 1960s, Vergara’s career is part of the history of Brazilian art.

His work went through many stages over the last fifty years: from a beginning that flirted with pop; through the famous photos from his immersion in the Cacique de Ramos street carnival block; to a return to painting, with the crucial use of the monotype technique.

He is still experimenting with new ways to insert his poetic agenda into the world, and year after year Carlos Vergara consolidates this investigation, which brings together plastic eloquence and conceptual austerity.

In his partnership with designer Etel Carmona, he engendered the Relicários collection – composed of objects of art that function as furniture – which was shown to the public at the SP-Arte fair in 2017.

‘I think design has no contradiction with art. It's just the question of function, which is also a lesson for me.’

The idea of art is to touch subtle areas of your brain to allow your intuition to come out.
