The Missões ruins are found in an area that extends from Rio Grande do Sul (the southmost state of Brazil) to Paraguay and Argentina. They evoke the epic adventures of a specific group of Jesuit priests – artists, musicians and architects – that resulted in a Guarani nation, mentioned by Robespierre in his speeches during the French Revolution, and that was finally destroyed by the army orchestrated by the Marquis of Pombal. Now all that is left is rubble, over which the artist creates his monotypes, and from where he collects Guarani crafts, as well as wool from a native species of black sheep that still remains to this day. The artifacts – the monotype, two photographs, the piece of craft and the tuft of black wool – are placed in a display/tabernacle – a reliquary – a screen made of sucupira wood, elegantly designed and brought to life by Etel Carmona.
